INSTEON

INSTEON technology, developed by Smartlabs Inc, utilizes dual-mesh network to send signals both through the air (RF) and over the existing electrical wires (powerline) in the home. Every INSTEON-enabled device acts a repeater increasing the signal strength and reliability as more devices are added to the system. In addition, each INSTEON message contains error detection.

Since X-10 uses 11 power cycles to communicate, sending every command twice pausing between each transmission, X-10 has the overall communication speed of 0.5 seconds. In comparison, INSTEON sends commands at a rate of every 0.05 seconds.

This eliminates the delay that X-10 users dislike. Pressing a button should result in an action within a tenth of a second to appear instantaneous .

But with the installed base of over 2 million X-10 devices, INSTEON devices also talk X-10. This allows the integration of existing devices with INSTEON products.
